A week in Cartmel

A week in Cartmel in Cumbria.

Just had a week away in Cartmel in Cumbria. Apparently it’s quite popular, so popular in fact that the New York Times voted it the worlds 44th top destination in 2014. Something to do with chef Simon Rogan having 2 star Michelin restaurant there (L’Enclume) as well as his gastropub (The Pig and Whistle).  Also well known for it’s sticky toffee pudding, artisan:- read pricey cheese shop, coffee shop and microbrewery squeezed around a tiny village square. We ate at The Pig and Whistle as 4 of us could eat for the price of 1 at L’Enclume. I’m no foodie but to me the food at The Pig and Whistle was top notch. Another great local gastropub was The Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank. A nice country pub with lovely views out across the countryside. A little further away than the pubs in Cartmel but not too far.

Cartmel is a nice place to locate yourself for a Lakes visit as most sights are reasonably close by. Windermere, Ullswater, Coniston, Kendal and Ulverston the birthplace of Stan Laurel all within 30-40 mins away. I’d go back in an instant.
